It’s Not a Victory, It’s Just Your Turn
I learned a hard truth in life.
There is no real “winning” over people.
Sometimes, we feel happy that we won an argument. We corner the other person, make them uncomfortable, and walk away feeling proud. I’ve seen people celebrate these moments like a victory.
But we forget something important.
The other person will also get their turn.
Let me give a simple example.
Imagine you argue with someone at work. You prove your point, make them look wrong in front of others, and feel good about it. For that moment, it feels like you’ve won.
But days later, the same person gets a chance. Maybe in another meeting, another situation. This time, they point out your mistake, question you, and put you in the same position. Now you feel hurt, embarrassed, and angry.
That’s how it goes.
It keeps rotating.
In Tamil, there is a saying:
“தீதும் நன்றும் பிறர் தர வாரா”
“Theedhum nandrum pirar thara vaaraa”
It means that neither good nor bad truly comes from others. What we experience in life is often the result of our own actions, directly or indirectly. So blaming or celebrating others too much doesn’t really make sense.
People say, “Don’t celebrate too early.”
But I would say something stronger.
Don’t celebrate these things at all.
Because nothing is final. Not your win. Not their loss.
Life keeps moving. Situations keep changing. Today’s winner can be tomorrow’s loser.
So instead of getting too high on small wins or too low on losses, it’s better to stay neutral.
Stay calm. Stay grounded.
It will save you from a lot of unnecessary highs and painful falls.
There is nothing final in this world until you are dead.
Sorry… but it’s true.
As the Bible says:
“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”
— Ecclesiastes 1:2
And also:
“I have seen all the things that are done under the sun;
all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”
— Ecclesiastes 1:14
Life can feel this way at times. That’s why it’s better not to hold too tightly to wins or losses. Everything passes.
